Default A question...

Archaea mentioned something about Levi being team Discovery's guy right now. (Or did I misunderstood what he was saying?) Perhaps someone can help me understand something about the sport of cycling races:

How do teams work? Do the riders have roles to play on order to get the better rider of the team to place higher in a race?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Understanding team tactics in cycling is simply understanding aerodynamics. The person who cuts through the wind does 30% extra work. So teammates shield the race leader from the wind.

They also surround him to protect him from crashes.

In some tours they have a team time trial, of course teammates are helpful there.

On mountain stages, having a teammate with you can be critical. They can help guide you, or weaken your opponents with accelerations.

Teammates go back to the cars and get food and water.

THey can join breakaways that can take the pressure off your team to pull back the breakaway.

etc., etc.

Most rec teams don't work team tactics very well.

In pro teams, they split the bonuses equally so that the team members are willing to sacrifice for one another.

Thanks Mike and Archaea. Those answers make a lot of sense.
