How much should I spend for a trainer? (or whatever it's called to put my bike on in inclement weather)

I've upped my ride from one day to two a week (Tues and Sat) and am now doing about 30 miles each ride. I just want to be able to do something to keep up the exercise I get from riding.

How much you'll spend will depend on what you want. I got mine clearanced for <$100. Of course, I'm not a serious rider.

No matter what you want, you will almost certainly get a better price online. What you'll have to decide is if it's more important to you to support your local bike shop.

I decided to go with the savings instead.

100 to 200 is all, unless you get a 1200 computrainer.

I don't need anything fancy. Just something to keep me from locking the bike in the shed next to the Healthrider.

You can get a decent magnetic resistance trainer for about $109 through Performancebike.com or Nashbar.com.

A fluid resistance trainer will cost you between $129-159 right now. Its a good time to buy as many companies are gearing up for their spring stock.

Getting an adjustable resistance (for either magnetic or fliud) will add about $20 to the price.

I got the fliud resistance one from Performance last year and wish I got the adjustable resistance addition. Plus, I got it right as they were going into winter gear mode, so I unforntunately paid top dollar for mine. Steelblue got his a month later for $10 less than mine, but his also included the adjustable upgrade. I never claimed to be a very saavy shopper.
