This discussion has got me thinking of our cold war strategy: nukes aimed at population centers. We did this to deter them from nuking us, but what if they had? What if Russia had nuked us? Would it be wrong to kill civilians by nuking them back? Would it only have been morally correct to nuke their military installations? Why is it moral to kill a soldier but not a civilian?
Not saying I know the answers, just wanting to here some of the rationales behind the statements.

Unfortunately, wars are won by killing large numbers of people, not negotiation. And in war, it is even more unfortunate that the largest number of people being killed are civilians.
I don't believe it's moral to kill a soldier and immoral to kill a civilian. The difference is that it's more acceptable to kill a soldier because it's his job to put his life on the line at a time of war.
