RC Vikings is on a distinguished road
Default Haleakala

I know Arch has done this but has anyone else done the ride to the top of Maui? It goes from sea level to over 10,000 feet in roughly 37 miles. We drove up and saw about seven riders on the road that day. It looks like something every biker should try once in their life.

It's the longest climb I've ever done. The day I finished it, a guy told me Lance does it twice in a day. The only excuse I offered at being so slow was the fact I went up in a tri bike mostly in the aero position. He laughed.

Farrah has driven up in in a pounding rainstorm, with probably 50 feet of visibility. It was awesome. No bike riders.

I've driven it. Also drove to the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. I'd never attempt either on anything that wasn't motor powered. But then again I am a fat ass.

It rained and sleeted on us at the top. It awesome, but we were so cold descending, we paid somebody to take us out of the cold.

It's a very fun gradual climb. I only remember a few ascents of eight percent or greater. Most of the ascents were lesser.

You've done it before, n'est-ce pas?

I have not done this ride before, but I would like to try some day. I want to do it on the tandem so I can both rely on my wife's fitness to help push my sorry and over-sized butt up the mountain and so I can rely on the drum brake to stop my oversized butt from overheating the brakes on the descent and ruining a good day.
