Default question about tri-bikes

I have a friend who does sprint triathlons, but is riding a mountain bike.

He wants to upgrade and is looking at sizing. Probably interested in buying a mail order motobecane like me.

His inseam is 85 cm. So that puts him at a 56cm or 58cm. Assuming average torso length, what is the preference?

I was reading on another site a guy said to go with the smaller size because you end up with more power.

Any thoughts?

smaller size. You're supposed to be uncomfortable during a TT.

Does he really need a tri-bike? 90% of the people doing tri's are just as well off putting tri bars on a conventional bike. This way they can take them off and still participate in group rides. I guess it all depends on how serious he is about racing.

I've seen tri bikes on group rides. they just don't get in the aero bars. And they shift inefficiently.

alsmost all of my training rides are solo. I wouldn't mind having a tribike myself.

Of course he needs a tri bike.

In a perfect world, one would have a crit bike, a long road bike, a hill road bike, a ITT bike and a tri bike, plus a bike or two for a friend who's visiting.

Geeze, the nerve of people believing he doesn't need a bike.

freakin A he is an investment finance guy, this should be pocket change for him.

he said the only problem is that whatever he gets, his wife will insist she get something just as good or better (she does the occasional no-training tri).
