Should BYU be worried about New Mexico
Across the board, nobody feels the same about the game this week. There are those that say BYU should win without a problem, and those that say New Mexico is a great team and will be tough to beat at their place. I think the majority of Cougar fans are expecting a win, but unlike last week when most everybody was certain the Cougars would bounce back at home and beat AFA, it seems not as many are certain BYU can win this weekend.

BYU has historically throttled UNM, but that is because they have sucked until about 10 years ago when they became average. I don't think they are a good team or program, but they are certainly solid. BYU has yet to prove they are good either, the Y has shown great potential to become a good team but other than AF, which is not a good litmus test, they have yet to demonstrate good play across the board in one game. I can see scenarios where if BYU makes the mistakes they have made in every game this year it creates a way for UNM to win. If both teams play their best, I think BYU wins.

The outcome of this game has a lot to do with whether the Safeties have learned their lessons about biting so hard on play action and a number of other trick plays.
In the AFA game there were still a number of instances where they did bite hard, same with the corners. The only reason why those plays weren't completed is because Carney isn't a very good passer and because BYU was getting pressure on him early and often. If BYU leaves themselves to getting burned with a QB who can hit the deep ball like Porterie we could find ourselves in another shootout ala Tulsa. Although,,,I've a hunch this game might be lower scoring than most expect. BYU and UNM are at the top of the nation in time of possession. Both teams might try to grind it out and keep the other offense off the field. My guess right now for a score is similar to what we saw 2 years ago....BYU 27 New Mexico 24. However,,,if it turns into a shootout...I'll say BYU 44 UNM 42

I haven't changed my mind yet. We win by 10 or more. UNM can't handle the pressure of a must win like the Cougs can.
Closest away game left will be Wyoming. |

Utah and TCU are the only teams that should be able to compete with BYU year in and year out. CSU, WYO, UNLV, AFA, SDSU, and NM should each beat BYU about once in ten years. I feel like BYU should beat both Utah and TCU at least 65% of the time. BYU will not be back until we can take a win against teams like New Mexico for granted. If we have to fear a team like New Mexico we are not even a Top 50 team.

I have to admit I'm scared about this game. In fact, I think it might be our toughest game left on the schedule.
I think it's one of those games where we lose a close one, and we walk away saying "we dominated that game how did we lose??". A couple costly turnovers will do us in, and UNM will dominate time of possession in second half, making the game an extremely frustrating one for Coug fans. Sorry that's just how I'm seeing this one. |

How many games have BYU won on the road this year? Of course the Cougars and the fans need to worry.

As Y or somebody else pointed out, every game here on out is loseable. This is the most loseable of all remaining games, but UNLV should also concern us. In fact, there isn't a remaining game beside EWU, that I feel comfortable about.
