On the play that's causing all of this replay in baseball talk, I'm not sure you could even overturn the call. You can't see exactly where his hand is under the catcher foot, and doesn't the ump signal "safe" before the tag (after the cather had retrieved the ball)? To me that'd be the equivalent of blowing the whistle as Holliday had time to get back to the bag. Last edited by SteelBlue; 10-03-2007 at 06:27 PM. |

However I think that it has made a huge difference in righting several wrongs. That right there to me is paramount over the few extra minutes it takes to make it right.

I don't know that I can agree that's it righted enough wrongs. Maybe I just remember the overturns that go against my team.

I prefer the human element. I don't see it as wrong or right. I see it as a call made from the perspective of the umpire. The vast majority of the time the game isn't decided at the plate in the bottom of the 13th inning on a call by the umpire, but by the players throughout the game. Had this same Halliday who benefited from the call at the end not overplayed a fly ball, the Padres would not have scored the tying run in the late innings of regulation and it would not have gone extra innings. So the human element was there again.

Nice shot. I'm going to have to take a knee for a bit.
