So I convinced my whole family to go deep sea fishing
tomorrow. It will either be a blast or a disaster. 24 hours from now we should know.

Well we made it through the day and it was a blast. No puking involved and we caught a ton of fish. Only kept a few as we mostly caught red snapper which you can't keep right now because they say they are overfished. Which seems lame because i bet 80% of the fish caught today were red snapper. Lost track of how many of those we caught but I bet it was 20+.
What we kept: 2 - strawberry grouper 1 - ling? 1- king mackrel 1- grouper (24" caught by yours truly ... should be good eatin') 1 - trigger fish We gave all of them but the big grouper to the deckhand who helped us out. Had the grouper filleted and will have it prepared at the restaurant here. The largest fish by far was caught by my 7 year old daughter. Unfortunately it was a red snapper but I bet it was 30" ... it was about half the size of her! Okay I say she caught it but needless to say she had help reeling it in. Even the 5 year old caught a couple of fish. The 12 year old only caught 2 but I told here it was because she refused to touch the bait. Everyone else did and caught many more. My 10 year old caught 8 fish! I grew up doing this in So. Cal and this is why I can't get into fresh water fishing. I prefer catching ... not just fishing. I'll post some pics when I get home and download the camera. |

Nice FM. Sounds like fun. I haven't been fishing on the ocean since before my Grandad passed away. He was an avid fisherman and had his own boat on the gulf. Took us out fairly regularly. I will admit I did get sick once....but only once. You really can't predict when it will affect you that way and when it won't.

We were preemptive with the motion sickness meds. Started last night and then again this morning. Since we didn't know who would/wouldn't get sick we had everyone take them. There were plenty of people on the boat who were not so wise. Maybe it's just a faulty memory or the time of year but the gulf seemed a lot choppier / bigger swells than I remember from fishing in California.
Also, every time we saw a shrimp boat I couldn't help but think of Forrest and Captain Dan. |
