The e-mail campaign just made me more curious to see what it is all about. I'll probably try and pick up the books sometime.

If you've actually read the book, then I'll listen to your opinion. I don't need you to blindly spam me with these e-mail campaigns.

This is precisely why church members looks at so much pornography, and why in the 1960's there was a drug problem in the church.

When people say "don't do it," it increases other's curiosities.

be careful on this point, however, as we still need to say no porn or drugs, just don't overdo it. ALso, note that the Golden compass is not like either porn or drugs.

Yeah you make a good point, so let me clarify. I don't mean to say that Dan is a Hustler King or Farrah rolls the spliff. What I mean is, most of us have probably gotten the emails and seen the early warnings from church members advising others of the content of that film. My point is, by actually raising awareness, interest and curiosity are also raised, and many people become more likely to embrace the taboo than had they not been advised to stay away in the first place.

Actually, the only negative feedback I've heard about the Golden Compass is from people who have never actually read the book. There were a couple women in my ward who responded to the mass e-mail to say they had both enjoyed the trilogy, and found nothing offensive in them. I also don't see the need to coddle children to this extent.

The furor that's going to go into overdrive when Dan Brown releases the supposed book he's been working on about Joseph Smith, Masonics and Mormons happens,,,,cougarboard and mullahs abroad might go into a record setting meltdown.
