if gas and oil were smart (which they are not), they would be doing all kinds of conservation projects (but they do not).

I'm looking forward to the Wyoming economy tanking! Make the land cheap for me and my liberal friends to buy and set aside for our vacation homes!

Who says they're not? Doing conservation projects, that is. Above and beyond what we do in and around the fields themselves there's millions of dollars pouring into off-site mitigation efforts.

That's the rub. As your nemesis posted in the global warming thread, it's all political. The environmental movement has found its spotted owl. Never mind that the thing's not even close to going extinct, it's all about perception. And they're good at exploiting perception.

Plus the American people are probably the biggest closet self-loathers in the world. If we're not screwing something up our collective angst will invent something that we're messing up. Of course we can't have abundant cheap energy without killing off the polar bear/sage grouse/prebble's mouse or what have you. We can't have good without bad, whether real or imaginary bad. It just can't happen.
