Nothing to worry about, IMO.
1) I doubt folks will equate this to a crucifix (I certainly wouldn't have). 2) I doubt it will sell.

Coming in late on this one.
I find myself more on the side of SIEQ on this one. Not that I'm terribly indignant or frustrated about it, but I am sick of Mormon kitsch. The worst place for this isn't Salt Lake, it's Nauvoo. They have every gimicky little trinket to try and profit off of members emotions while visiting the area. I went there a few years ago for the first time and saw this T-shirt. Pathetic. |

Totems and symbols are fine with me. I think that this particular item is real cheesy. In fact most of Deseret Book's catalog is cheesy.
As I said I am generally in favor of totems and symbols, because I am in favor of group identity and peculiarity (not exclusivity). I think that group identity is what has allowed certain groups that are periodically the target of political and de facto discrimination to thrive. I dont think that the type of discrimination we have experienced is over permanently, and I wonder if sometimes we have forgotten the depths of the hatred for us. To the extent that totems and symbols can help reinforce these things I am in favor of them. Maybe I am paranoid. |

You said you were beside yourself in the initial post. As mentioned ad nauseum, the ring is stupid and cheesy, but just because Deseret Book is selling it doesn't mean the church is encouraging us to wear one. I'd never heard of it myself. This isn't a big deal.

Me too. Just did in fact. Very hard to talk to someone who cannot disagree respectfully. Its just a lack of maturity and it his age if that were going to happen it would have already. I suppose those who enjoy it can go on enjoying it.

That's what people normally do when they can't hang. I imagine that doesn't go over well in court. What a weenie....you can dish it out, but not take it. lol.
