Rented this movie over the weekend. I had heard quite a few good things about it so we had some expectations. But we found it to be a bit disappointing. Will Smith did a good job (and his little boy was adorable) but he didn't have much to work with. The story was inspiring in a way, but it was a pretty boring story overall. Just a series of bad breaks that the guy has to endure with little plot or character development. More grueling than entertaining or moving.

Stranger than Fiction was pretty good (as long as you have low expectations).

I thought it was well acted, but like you, didn't really enjoy it overall. I just didn't think the payoff was good enough or long enough for viewers to walk away with any good feelings. You spend the whole time watching this character get beat up and beat up some more and then for about two minutes you get the payoff.
