Default MWC football hierarchy

Assuming BYU beats SDSU this weekend, after nine years of MWC football, the league shapes up like this (league games only):

TCU
18-6 0.750 (avg 6.0 wins per year)
Best finishes: One championship (2005), 2nd place (2006)
Worst finish: 5th (2007)

BYU
46-20 0.697 (avg 5.1 wins per year)
Best finishes: Three championships (2001,2006,2007), one co-championship (1999)
Worst finish: 7th (2002)

Utah
42-24 0.636 (avg 4.7 wins per year)
Best finishes: Two championships (2003,2004), one co-championship (1999)
Worst finish: 5th-tie (2000,2002)

New Mexico
38-28 0.576 (avg 4.2 wins per year)
Best finishes: 2nd (2002,2003,2004)
Worst finish: 5th (1999 tie, 2000 tie, 2006)

Colorado State
37-29 0.561 (avg. 4.1 wins per year)
Best finishes: Two championships (2000,2002), one co-championship (1999)
Worst finishes: Last-8th-tie (2006), 7th-tie (2007)

Air Force
32-34 0.485 (avg. 3.6 wins per year)
Best finishes: 2nd (2000,2007)
Worst finishes: 7th (1999,2005)

SDSU
27-39 0.409 (avg. 3.0 wins per year)
Best finish: 3rd-tie (2002)
Worst finishes: 7th (2001,2004)

Wyoming
19-47 0.288 (avg 2.1 wins per year)
Best finish: 3rd-tie (2006)
Worst finishes: Last-8th (2000,2001,2002), 8th of 9 (2005)

UNLV
17-49 0.258 (avg 1.9 wins per year)
Best finish: 3rd-tie (2000)
Worst finishes: Last-9th (2005,2007), last-8th (1999,2004)

The only teams to finish last (or tied for last) in the conference in 9 years?
UNLV (5 times), Wyoming (4 times), and CSU (once)

Number of years with a winning record in conference games:
BYU 7
Utah 6
Colorado State 6
New Mexico 5
Air Force 3
TCU 2 (of 3 yrs)
Wyoming 2
SDSU 1
UNLV 1

It would seem that if any two teams should get booted, it would be SDSU and UNLV.

SDSU is actually considering dropping football altogether. There is so little interest in the team that every year they lose over two million dollars. Throughout the rest of division one, college football is usually the cash cow that allows universities to afford all of the Title IX programs and doozies like volleyball and skiing.

Are you serious? That'd be very interesting to see what the MWC would do in that situation.

SDSU really is the most pathetic program in the country. They're located in one of the most ideal cities in the U.S. and they're right in the middle of great football talent. There is no reason, other than incompetence, that Wyoming, CSU, AFA, and UNM all have better programs than SDSU.

You'd think that, but UCLA and USC do more damage than you might expect.

I see your point, but look at what Southern Florida has done in ten years in a state with U. Florida, Florida State, and Miami. Another reference point is TCU. They're a small, private school in the recruiting backyard of Texas, aTm, Texas Tech, Baylor, and Oklahoma, yet they still have the ability to put together a very good football program.

Maybe SDSU will never be a Utah or BYU, but there's no excuse for not regularly being in the top third of the MWC.

Yeah here is an article about the resolution to abolish football:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports...s27azfoot.html

That was in September, and the faculty vote was negative. But the point is that this is an issue that keeps returning to the table.

You make a good case. Maybe it's that they haven't found a coaching staff who can do with less than 5-star recruits, I don't know. I just know a few friends who've attended/live there, and according to them SDSU seems to lose every head-to-head recruiting battle with USC and UCLA. But that's no excuse for a crappy program.

Good article. The philosophy professor has a good point, especially when the football team is running a $3 million deficit while earning only $4.7 million in revenue, requiring subsidization by a broadband project. Not a wise use of taxpayer funds.

I'm for bringing Boise St. into the fold, if they still want to come. Its a strong program with the potential to bring $$ into the conference(as opposed to just spending it like the current bottom 3 or 4 in the conference).
