As Solon states, PR is the key thing the Church craves, and winning sports teams feed that craving.

I'd say publicity creates awareness and penetration. With awareness potential recruits eventually develop a sense of credibility by virtue of the commonality.

So BYU sports are indirect "tools" of missionary efforts just as any other publicity is.

It's true that winning teams create publicity, but at the same time, off field problems do as well. Were the problems under Crowton also considered a missionary tool as well?

They showed the diversity of sexual expression of BYU students, that although we speak about chastity some of our students desire to explore all aspects of sexuality before they decided which version of chastity satisfies them.
