If a D-1 team went 9-1 against this schedule, where would you rank them nationally:
Fordham Army Delaware Hofstra Brown James Madison Richmond New Hampshire Massachusetts Maine They wouldn't even make my top 25. Well, that schedule (Rhode Island's by the way) is the #119 toughest schedule in the country per Sagarin. It's tougher than Boise St's (122) and MUCH tougher than Hawaii's (157). Yet here sits Boise St primed to make a bowl game theoretically reserved for a top 12 team, despite having played a schedule worse than Rhode Island's (but 1-9 Idaho is up this week), and actually having lost to a terrible Washington team. As big a travesty as Hawaii making a BCS bowl game would be, at least they'd be undefeated against their piss poor schedule. By the way, here's the SOS of 1-AA teams along with all 4 I-A teams who've played a softer schedule than W Carolina (it's also interesting to note, if you throw out W Kentucky [provisional I-A], Hawaii and BSU have the 1st and 3rd worst schedules in the country): W Carolina 104 S Utah 111 Elon 114 Northeastern 118 Rhode Island 119 Boise St 122 Furman 123 W Illinois 124 Will & Mary 125 Chattanooga 126 Citadel 127 App St 128 Villanova 129 W Kentucky 130 UTEP 131 Illinois St 132 NW State 133 Youngstown St 134 SF Austin 135 Ga Southern 136 Richmond 137 Indiana St 138 N Hampshire 139 U Mass 140 Wofford 141 Maine 142 SE Louisiana 143 Delaware 144 Sam Houston St 145 James Madison 146 N Iowa 147 Towson 148 UC Davis 149 S Dakota St 150 Hofstra 151 Missouri St 152 N Colorado 153 Sac St 154 Portland St 155 Nicholls St 156 Hawaii 157

You want to see what a #155 schedule looks like (2 better than Hawaii's)?:
McNeese State California-Davis Sacramento State San Diego State Eastern Washington Northern Arizona Idaho State Weber State Montana Montana State Nice, isn't it. So what does it all mean? I can't decide if 11-1 Boise St or 12-0 Hawaii making a BCS bowl is a bigger travesty, but it's a terrible precedent. Why should anybody schedule anybody any more. Give me a weak conference, 4 body bag nonconference games and a $17M pay day. This is SO stupid. I didn't think BSU deserved a BCS game last year, but if either of these teams deserves in this year, that BSU team should have been declared national champions. At least they beat a good Oregon St team. Shouldn't you have to beat SOMEBODY. Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.

One more thing.
I think I'm probably the first person in the world to ever look up the Portland State schedule. I've lost my PSU Viking Schedule virginity.

Frankly, I don't give much credence to computer models that attempt to somehow quantify quality of 1-AA teams relative to 1-A teams. Thus, these comparitive SOS you're showing don't really mean much to me.

Apples meet oranges. Utah 2004 is a prime example of my BCS litmus test for small schools. Make an effort in scheduling and win impressively. (I would also accept playing a tough schedule and losing once - I probably would have been fine with a 1-loss Utah team making the BCS this year, a 1-loss BYU, probably not, but close.) Hawaii and BSU have not come any where near passing my litmus test. They're an embarrassment to the system.

BSU has lost to 3-7 Washington and Hawaii has gone to OT against 2 teams not in the top 100. Where should they be ranked? Should they be in line for a BCS bowl? For some reason perception and reality are way out of line on these WAC teams.

Personally, I think Boise is a lot better team than Hawaii and I think they've shown they are a lot better team now (with their new starting QB) than they were to start the season against Washington.
Washington wasn't a bad team to start the season, but their BRUTAL schedule + injuries have reduced them to being a pretty crappy team now. If Boise doesn't beat Hawaii, I'd be very surprised. |
