Default Eastern Promises

starring Vigo Mortensen.

A very dark movie looking into the Russian mafia. Interesting but not a light watch.

Is it a sequel to "A History of Violence"?

I don't think so. It might be a prequel, but I really don't think so.

It was not quick moving, but it's got an interesting storyline and the acting is gritty. The violence is real and there is a fight scene with Vigo unlike any I remember seeing in recent memory.

He's is a sauna, naked as a jaybird and attacked by two hoods. It is gruesome.

Same director and lead, but not related otherwise.

I give it a marginal thumbs up, but it didn't strike me as being terribly entertaining or important. I mostly have forgotten about it, other than that fight scene, which was quite well done, and contained more anus and testicles than Borat (unrelated observations, mind you).

The Italian neckties were gruesome as well. I'm not stating it's a great film but if you have time, it's rentable.

Yea I remember that, as well. I'm so affected by my mood when I watch a movie, and yet so rarely willing to see a movie more than once, that I rarely give any credence to my own opinions on them. I do remember loving History of Violence, however, and feeling distracted during Eastern Promises.

In other news, I finally saw Sunshine, and being a sucker for "realistic" sci-fi (defined as unrealistic sci-fi that at least tries) I expected to love it but came away pissed at the director. Man what a disaster that turned out to be. If you haven't seen it, I recommend savoring the first hour, then turning it off and imagining your own ending.

I saw it, very gruesome. I bet Borat could have handled him though.

Eastern Promises made me want to shower afterwards. There are a few movies that have made me just feel dirty. A History of Violence, American History X, and Mystic River fall into this category.

Speaking of the fight scene, I can't believe I had never heard about it at all before seeing this film. Such scenes usually cause quite a stir especially with someone as popular as the Ranger.

If there's any accuracy in portraying the Russian mafia, it paints a grim picture of a cynical group of useless garbage.

I just saw this movie last weekend. Liked it OK. Above average film. But yeah pretty dark and some disturbing images.

I rented it because we've liked almost everything from Focus Features and I'm still in love with Naomi Watts from getting obsessed with Mulholland Drive last year.

Reinforced my long standing theory: mafia partnerships never last. Someone will always turn on the other. If you want to go into crime, go it alone.
