Preferred Hotel Chain
My firm recently cancelled a long standing agreement with Marriott due to poor service and predatory pricing. After spending 168 nights last year at Marriott properties, I am trying to get a feel for preferred hotel chains.

When I used to be a road warrior, I used to always stay at the Marriott. I thought they were great. However, the last time I stayed at one (mid-2001), it was the WTC Marriott that sat at the base of the Twin Towers. That used to be a particularly nice hotel.
After that time, I haven't traveled except for conferences which are held at designated hotels or resorts and so my choice of hotel is already made for me. |

Sorry I can't help you here but a 168 nights on the road is a ton. When I hear people say they want a job where they travel a lot I think to myself they haven't done it much.

If I was single, I might not have minded traveling all the time, but it's just brutal with a family. I'm glad I don't travel more than 2 weeks a year now.

Preferred chains if somebody else is paying, Four Seasons or Ritz, but if I am paying, Hilton.
Nothing beats a Four Seasons for service and quality, though pricing isn't cheap. Hilton can be pricey or middle priced depending upon the town. Another compromise is the Radisson for families and the like.

The re-vamped Holiday Inn Express hotels aren't too bad.

Starwood all the way. Esp W, St Regis, and Luxury Collection. Sheraton and Foir Points, not so much. Westins are fine, but boring and bland.
Marriott....yikes. Hilton.....no way in HHell!

It depends on what you want. I think Marriott is the most reliable mid-range hotel. Four Seasons is the most reliably excellent five star hotel. There's something about Motel 6's wholly disciplined spartan approach that is admirable. Plastic showers and coffee in paper cups you have to go to the lobby for, but totally clean, and hey, you get what you pay for.
