Yes, the Iraqis didn't offer an alternative view, but now that the liberal media that is fawning all over Obama will jump on it and ignore anything to the contrary, so the comments that were reported are not really what Maliki said, so perhaps it really is devastating. Devastating to the truth of what was said, that is.

Are you happy that Obama has the US mainstream media on his side? I know I would be if the candidate of my choice was in the same position.

Yes, I saw that, and it amused me. Perhaps after a few more calls from the Bush administration they will even attempt an alternate translation. Don't hold your breath.

Whether or not the media is biased towards Obama isn't really relevant to whether or not Maliki said 16 months is a good timetable. This is the second time Maliki has said the US needs to withdraw quickly (and nobody said his first statement was "mistranslated"). This time he took it a step further and said 16 months is reasonable.

Maybe Maliki just doesn't understand Iraq. He should visit Iraq to get a better sense of the facts on the ground.

Maliki is a shrewd politician, even for an Iraqi. He's obviously playing American politics to get what he wants from the Bush administration. Cheers to him for a well-played hand.

McCain is coming off as petulant and mean-spirited.

In other words, he is being his true self.

While Obama comes across as visionary and progressive.

Obama 1 McCain 0.

Ah, remember the good ol' days when McCain was Waters' goldenboy...

This is a good report on the trip and more on the Maliki comments. It's from the NYT. It's interesting to get the perspective of Sunni politicians - who don't favor Maliki's sentiments, because they fear a power vacuum.
