About rivalry smack
This board is great for numerous reasons, but one that is starting to stand out is the lack of over used rivalry smack.
to all you cougarfans and breathren in the gospel (or not) I thank you!

Good call. It's refreshing to actually get to talk sports in regards to BYU/Utah without the trolling and the lame smack that is all overplayed.

FWIW: I'm love football. love it. love it. want to marry it.
when (if) mtn is available, you can count on me to tivo each cougar game and offer my unbiased feedback. I might be a Ute fan, but always wish the cougars well and a near perfect season (only losing of course to the utes).

I just can't bring myself to cheer for the Utes. I will cheer for them in all non-conference games, but more than that? It would cause too much pain.
It would be like fire cheering on the advance of water. Or like Johnny Lingo cheering on the use of reason. It just violates univeral laws. |

Any win by an in-conference team vs. a non-conference team is a benefit. Cheering for a non-conference team against your rival is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Those who cannot understand this are morons (So sayeth the Hippie).

Maybe all of the cougar fans here are intelligent enough to realize that we have nothing to talk smack about and really havent for 4 years. If we end up beating Utah this year, I might participate in some good-natured ribbing. But like I said, there isnt much we can talk smack about at this point.

I really don't care if BYU wins or loses. I have many BYU fans in my friends and family, and am not out to rub anything in their faces. How the Utes or Cougs fare does not vicariously reflect upon me whatsoever. Most fans seem unable to distinguish that fact. What amuses me is watching some people go off of the deep end over such trivial, minor comments, as though the individual represents the university. In reality I've found that less than half of the "fans" of either school have zero connection to it whatsoever.
What I enjoy about the rivalry is how entertaining it is. For example, I thought USC won the 2004 game vs BYU, but after reading Dick Harmon's article the morning after, I was confused. Also amusing is watching one fanbase redicule the "gay" pirate ship to no end, yet seem ready to fight with teeth to defend the slip-n-slide. And if the roles had been reversed, the result would have been the same. I should shut up now, because I've certainly dangled plenty of carrots in my day. |
