Is the World Against BYU?
According to this post, it just might be.
http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=2526412 Do BYU fans really think that the local media has a bias against them? Or can we all be reasonable and say that these guys know what gets them ratings and that is riling up fans from both schools? This is ridiculous.

BYU is squeaky clean. They set themselves up as righteous superiors. That pisses a lot of people off, especially the local media types who are dominated by non-LDS or Utah outsiders. When people get the chance, they love to knock BYU down a few pegs. You don't agree? Last edited by jay santos; 03-05-2007 at 03:07 PM. |

Of course this is BYU's fault for claiming to the world that they are in fact the children of the promise and as such are better than everyone else. Not that the sponsoring religion makes such claims and most then impute that claim onto BYU sports. But nobody hates BYU just because of the religious affiliation. It was a chant that should have gone unsaid, IMO. It was dumb, lacked class and opened up an opportunity for some pointless chant to get attention that this team and hoops program deserve right now.

Was the chant bad in my opinion? No, not really. But I can see why there is such an outcry by the local media about it. I'm sure many feel that there is a double standard and chants at Utah games are not scrutinized as much as chants at BYU games, but again, Utah doesn't go out of its way to let everyone know that they are above that the wat BYU does.

I also don't think there is a bias. I think the point of it all is to get ratings. If DJ and PK get on the radio and said "We're going to open up the phone lines, defend your actions Cougar fans," the phone lines would be jammed and they would accomplish thier goal. They play the fans to get ratings.

To me, bias suggests intentional disrespect...or not giving them credit for how good they are or getting a big win. For example: If DJ came out and said what he said about BYU fans and then went on to say that their OCC wasn't a big deal because the MWC is down this year or that they were just the best team in a bad league, I could see some bias because this BYU team can play and at that point he would just be blatantly ignoring the facts. I guess the real problem is that it is difficult to seperate the basketball team from the basketball fans. My feeling, as I stated above, is that if you want to claim bias, it has to come in the form of being critical of the team or not crediting the team for their success. Pointing out an error in judgement on the part of the fans, while possibly misguided, doesn't suggest bias. Did I stay consistent there?
