Common Consent
Have you ever seen someone cast a negative vote when "sustaining" was asked for?

Never have. Though I have heard of it happening and my parents have both witnessed it.

When my older brother was a teenager, he did that a few times when they were sustaining people he didn't like. They would call him into the bishops office afterward to discuss why he cast a negative vote.

I've seen young kids do it.
Nothing was done about it, to my knowledge. |

I almost had my shot at casting a negative vote.... One of the counselors in the bishopric gave my wife a calling without even letting me know (girls camp director which would require a time commitment on my end by taking off a week of work to watch our daughter). I didnt find out about the call until a couple days later when my wife mentioned it to me. Had she forgotten to say something I most certainly would have voted negatively.

I have seen it. I also seem to recall another thread about this in the past, although I am not sure if it was on CB or here. In any event, this was during a ward conference, as I recall (or some equivalent), when they were sustaining church officers and a guy voted negatively very loudly and defiantly and stood up to do so. He was asked to stop by the bishop's office to discuss. it. This took place in the Berkeley ward, which is, oddly enough, in Berkeley CA, and is a ward where this sot of thing is not altogether unheard of.

i remember hearing on the radio some women libers shout "NO" during conference when kimball was sustained.
my neighbor across the street growing up was in the stake pres. in his old stake. he was doing the sustaining in stake conference and he did the deal for the stake presidency as follows: "All in favor by the usual sign" "Any opposed?" <Scans the audience> "Anyone? Please?" he's quite a character.

I have seen it: on my mission they called a man to be in the primary presidency (young/immature branch). A couple of people opposed - I believe it is church policy that men can't serve in the Primary Presidency. The BP looked a bit lost at the pulpit and wasn't quite sure how to handle it. In the end they called a lady instead.
My dad said that once when he was a district pres. a lady voted against him for some reason or another. Three months later she was in his office for a temple recommend interview and answered "yes" to the question of whether or not she sustained her leaders. Interesting. |
