I have a soft spot for Elder Faust. My grandfather was a SP back in the 60's and 70's in rural Idaho. A poor farmer/rancher. Lived in an old POS home. As was the custom, GA's visiting for stake conference would stay in the SP's home. They had alot of kids and often the GA would have to sleep in an uncomfortable bunkbed. Poor accomodations at best.

Some GA's were really put off by the whole thing and kind of looked down on grandpa. But Faust was just a great guy, humble, down to earth. He visited a few times and always acted as if he really appreciated the hospitality, he took an interest in my Grandpa and his ranching operation, even asking for a tour at one point. Just a genuine, humble servant of the Lord.

Anyway, 20 years later, when I was at BYU I ran across Elder Faust at the Wilk. I said hi and mentioned how he used to stay at my Grandpa's house and had to sleep in the bottom bunkbed with some snot nosed kid in the top bunk. He asked who my grandpa was and when I told him, he instantly remembered and mentioned how impressed he was with my grandpa's ranch and his engineering prowess in getting water from one end of the ranch to the other. It really made grandpa's day when I told him about the encounter.

that's a cool story.

One thing I noted in my mind, is that in today's day and age an apostle would be unwise to sleep in the same room as non-adults. For liability/legal reasons.

I'm sure you're right, I doubt it happens anymore. Different times back then for sure. I've heard that nowadays they generally stay at hotels anyway.

Small town called Mackay in the Lost River Valley. It's about 70 miles NW of Blackfoot.

About six years ago, I had several friends putting on an impromptu concert at the City Creek Park in SLC, located on the corner of North Temple and State Street. President Faust walked by and asked if he could give them a blessing, and they all bowed their heads and he said a prayer. About a half hour later, the police told everyone they had to leave; it wasn't one of the scheduled summer concerts and they did not have a permit to hold a concert in that park.

I did not have any special experiences with Elder Faust, but his talk in conference last April was my favorite conference talk of all time. It was the most emotional I have felt about a church subject in my life. He will truly be missed.
